Vang Vieng is a town in Laos located 170km from Vientiane on the banks of the Nam Song River in a landscape of karst landforms similar to the depictions in traditional Asian prints.
When globalisation accelerated the flow of people, the town lost its peaceful atmosphere to toxic tourism. It became a haven for young people from all over the world to enjoy cheap alcohol and drugs while enjoying water activities in the river. There was total debauchery and deaths. Foreign governments eventually put pressure on the Lao authorities to close down all the bars on the river.
Today Vang Vieng is reborn and has regained its bucolic calm.
