Née en Belgique, Virginie Nguyen Hoang a étudié le journalisme à l'école IHECS (Bruxelles) et s'est formée au photojournalisme à la Danish School of Media and Journalism (Danemark). En 2010, elle est devenue photographe pour l'agence de presse française Wostok Press, qu'elle a quittée en 2013. Parallèlement, en mai 2012, elle a rejoint le Studio Hanslucas et a cofondé le Collectif HUMA.

De janvier 2012 à août 2014, elle s’est installée en Égypte, travaillant comme freelance et comme photojournaliste pour les journaux locaux « Egypt Independent » puis « Mada Masr ».

À travers ses photographies, elle cherche à raconter des histoires, notamment celles qui traitent de l'exclusion sociale et des conséquences des conflits sur les populations locales.

Depuis le début de sa carrière, Virginie a réalisé plusieurs reportages en Belgique ainsi qu'en Syrie, Égypte, Irak, Turquie, Libye, Ukraine, Vietnam, Philippines, Afghanistan, Inde, à Gaza, en République centrafricaine et en Malaisie.

Virginie collabore avec de nombreux journaux et magazines tels que Le Monde, Le Parisien Magazine, Le Figaro, VSD, L'Obs, Libération, La Croix, Le Pèlerin, Causette, L'Hebdo, L’Illustré, Le Temps, The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Politiken, De Standaard, La Libre Belgique...

En 2012, elle a reçu un Nikon Press Award Benelux dans la catégorie « Jeune photographe prometteur - Histoires » pour son reportage sur les Roms de Bruxelles. En 2014, Virginie a obtenu une mention spéciale au Prix Roger Pic de la Scam pour son sujet « Gaza, the aftermath ». En 2016, son travail à Gaza a remporté le troisième prix dans la catégorie Éditorial - Reportage photo des MIFA. Elle est également lauréate de la bourse Vocatio en Belgique, nominée au « Prix Bayeux Calvados des correspondants de guerre » dans la catégorie « Jeune reporter » et a remporté le Prix TV Régional des étudiants et stagiaires de Normandie avec le documentaire vidéo War is a Bitch sur les soldats de l'armée ukrainienne combattant sur les fronts les plus durs à l'est du pays.

En septembre 2018, Virginie a remporté le Prix ANI-PixTrakk au Festival international de photojournalisme Visa pour l'image avec son reportage Gaza, the aftermath.

En novembre 2019, elle a été lauréate du « Prix de la citoyenneté » décerné par la Fondation P&V en Belgique.

En septembre 2023, elle a remporté le Visa d’or franceinfo : Prix de la meilleure information numérique au Festival Visa pour l'image à Perpignan pour son travail "Ukraine, la vie sous le feu de la guerre".

Born in Belgium, Virginie Nguyen Hoang studied journalism at the IHECS school (Brussels) as well as trained in photojournalism at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (Denmark). In 2010, she became a photographer for the French news agency Wostok Press but left in 2013. Meanwhile, in May 2012, she joined the Studio Hanslucas and became the co-founder of the Collectif HUMA.

From January 2012 to August 2014, she settled in Egypt as a freelancer but also as a photojournalist for the local newspapers « Egypt Independent » and then for « Mada masr ».

Through her photographs, she aims to tell stories, especially those concerning social exclusion and the consequences of conflict on local populations.

Since the beginning of her career, Virginie has carried out several reports in Belgium but also in Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Turkey, Libya, Ukraine, Vietnam, the Philippines, Afghanistan, India, in Gaza, the Central African Republic and Malaysia.

Virginie works with many newspapers and magazines such as Le Monde, Le Parisien Magazine, Le Figaro, VSD, L'Obs, Libération, La Croix, Le Pèlerin, Causette, l'Hebdo, l’Illustré, Le Temps, The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Politiken, De Standaard, La Libre Belgique...

In 2012, she received a Nikon Press Award Benelux in the “Promising Young Photographer-Stories” category with her story on the Roma of Brussels. In 2014, Virginie received a special mention at the Roger Pic Prize of the Scam with the subject "Gaza, the aftermath”. In 2016, her work in Gaza won the third prize in the Editorial – Photo essay category of the MIFA. She is also the laureate of the Vocatio Grant in Belgium, nominee at the "Prix Bayeux Calvados of war correspondents" in the "Young Reporter" Category and won the TV Regional prize from students and trainees in Normandy with the video documentary "War is a Bitch" on Ukrainian army soldiers fighting on the hardest fronts in the East of the country.

In September 2018, Virginie won the ANI-PixTrakk Prize at the International Photojournalism Festival "Visa pour l'image" with her story "Gaza, the aftermath".

In November 2019, she's the laureate of the "Prize of the citizenship" by the Foundation P&V in Belgium.

In September 2023, she won the "Visa d’or franceinfo: Award for the Best Digital News Story" at the Festival "Visa pour l'image" in Perpignan with her work "Ukraine, la Vie sous le feu de la guerre".
