FRANCE - Lyon (BW) : High school and university students take to the streets for act 3 of the protest movement
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, high school students, university students, teachers and parents marched in Lyon from Place Bellecour to Place Guichard, crossing the Pont de la Guillotière. The demonstration answered a nationwide call from high school and student organizations, backed by the education unions, for "act 3" of a movement that began in high schools in mid-September.
The cardboard placards spoke of underfunding and rejection of the Parcoursup university admissions platform: "We want the bac, not the BAC" (the baccalaureate exam, not the police anti-crime unit), "Macron in his palace, students without a budget", "Be young, do not keep quiet!", "Future teachers, let's mobilize".
The Rhône prefecture counted about 20,000 demonstrators, unions nearly 25,000. After the march arrived, several hundred people tried to continue toward the regional education authority. Fires were lit in streets of the 3rd arrondissement and police used tear gas. Authorities reported eleven people injured, nine of them police officers.
Nationwide, the Interior Ministry counted 256,000 demonstrators and organizers 450,000.
