Yan Morvan est né à Paris en 1954. Après des études de mathématiques puis de cinéma, il effectue des reportages sur les Hells Angels de Paris, puis sur les prostituées de Bangkok. En 1974, il publie sa première photographie dans le quotidien Libération. Jusqu'en 1976, il collabore à l'agence Fotolib de Libération, puis à l'agence Norma. La même année, paraît son premier livre sur les rockeurs, Le Cuir et le baston (prémices d'un travail sur les gangs qui durera vingt ans). Plus tard, il intègre l'équipe de Paris Match, puis celle du Figaro Magazine jusqu'en 1980.

De 1980 à 1988, il rejoint l'agence Sipa et devient correspondant permanent de l'hebdomadaire américain Newsweek, pour lequel il couvre les principaux conflits et même le mariage de Lady Di dont sa photo fera le tour du monde. Photographe indépendant depuis 1988, reconnu comme l'un des plus grands spécialistes de la photographie de guerre, il collabore régulièrement avec la plupart des grandes publications internationales.

Ses reportages de guerre lui vaudront le prix Robert-Capa, pour son travail au Liban en 1983, deux prix du World Press Photo et de nombreuses récompenses décernées par les écoles de journalisme américaines. Mettant sa notoriété et son expérience au service des jeunes photographes, il est successivement formateur à l'École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d'Arles (ENSP), et au Centre de Formation des Journalistes (CFJ). En l'an 2000, sa série de portraits de jeunes victimes de la route, fruit d'une commande pour le FNAC (Fonds National d'Art Contemporain), a été exposée au festival international de photojournalisme Visa pour l'image. Depuis 2004, il enchaîne les reportages sur des sujets de fond : les banlieues et les victimes de guerre ou de la route.

Yan Morvan est aujourd'hui considéré comme l'un des plus grands photojournalistes français. Ses nombreux scoops lui vaudront une reconnaissance et une notoriété internationale, mais également beaucoup d'ennuis : au Liban, il sera condamné à mort à deux reprises, en y réchappant toujours de façon miraculeuse. En France, son travail pour Libération ou Paris-Match sur les gangs lui vaudra d'être pris en otage et torturé pendant trois semaines par le serial killer Guy Georges.

Yan Morvan was born in Paris in 1954. After studying mathematics and cinema, he went on to report on the Hells Angels in Paris and then on the prostitutes of Bangkok. In 1974, he published his first photograph in the daily Libération. Until 1976, he worked for Libération's Fotolib agency, then for the Norma agency. The same year saw the publication of his first book on rockers, Le Cuir et le baston (the first of a series of works on gangs that would last twenty years). Later, he joined the team at Paris Match, then Figaro Magazine until 1980.

From 1980 to 1988, he joined the Sipa agency and became a permanent correspondent for the American weekly Newsweek, for which he covered all the major conflicts and even Lady Di's wedding, for which his photo made the rounds of the world. A freelance photographer since 1988, he is recognised as one of the leading specialists in war photography, and works regularly with most of the major international publications.

His war reporting won him the Robert Capa prize for his work in Lebanon in 1983, two World Press Photo awards and numerous prizes from American journalism schools. Using his reputation and experience to help young photographers, he has been a trainer at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d'Arles (ENSP) and the Centre de Formation des Journalistes (CFJ). In 2000, his series of portraits of young road victims, commissioned by the FNAC (Fonds National d'Art Contemporain), was exhibited at the Visa pour l'image international photojournalism festival. Since 2004, he has been working on a series of reports on in-depth subjects: suburbs, victims of war and road accidents.

Yan Morvan is now regarded as one of France's leading photojournalists. His many scoops earned him international recognition and fame, but also a lot of trouble: in Lebanon, he was sentenced to death twice, always miraculously escaping. In France, his work for Libération and Paris-Match on gangs led to him being taken hostage and tortured for three weeks by the serial killer Guy Georges.
