AUSTRALIE - The Rocks, là où Sydney est née
Au pied du Sydney Harbour Bridge, à quelques pas de Circular Quay, le quartier de The Rocks conserve les traces les plus anciennes de Sydney. C’est ici, en 1788, que les premiers colons britanniques s’installent, faisant de ce site le point de départ de la ville moderne.
Longtemps quartier populaire tourné vers les activités portuaires, The Rocks a vu se succéder marins, commerçants et travailleurs, dans un tissu urbain dense fait de ruelles étroites et de bâtiments en grès. Aujourd’hui restauré et classé, il offre un rare témoignage de l’architecture du XIXe siècle, au cœur d’une métropole contemporaine.
Échappant de peu à la démolition dans les années 1970, grâce à une mobilisation citoyenne, le quartier s’est progressivement transformé en pôle culturel et touristique. Marchés, galeries, pubs historiques et espaces d’exposition y attirent chaque année visiteurs et habitants.

At the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a few steps from Circular Quay, The Rocks district preserves Sydney's oldest traces. It was here, in 1788, that the first British settlers settled, making this site the starting point of the modern city.
Long a popular neighborhood turned towards port activities, The Rocks has seen sailors, traders and workers succeed each other, in a dense urban fabric made of narrow alleys and sandstone buildings. Today restored and classified, it offers a rare testimony of 19th century architecture, in the heart of a contemporary metropolis.
Strangly escaping demolition in the 1970s, thanks to citizen mobilization, the district gradually became a cultural and tourist hub. Markets, galleries, historical pubs and exhibition spaces attract visitors and residents every year.
Between colonial memory and urban animation, The Rocks is established as a place of transition, where the founding history of Sydney can still be read in the stone, in the middle of the constant flow of the city.
