AUSTRALIE - American River, entre lagune et océan
Situé sur la côte est de Kangaroo Island, au sud de l’Australie, American River est un village discret, tourné vers la mer et la lagune qui borde ses rives. Séparée du continent par le détroit de Backstairs Passage, Kangaroo Island se trouve à une quinzaine de kilomètres au large des côtes de l’Australie-Méridionale, face à la ville d’Adelaide. À une trentaine de kilomètres du port de Penneshaw, principal point d’accès à l’île, American River constitue l’un des points d’entrée vers une nature préservée, où les activités humaines restent étroitement liées à l’environnement.
La pêche et l’ostréiculture structurent encore le quotidien local, tandis que la Pelican Lagoon, zone protégée, abrite une biodiversité riche, notamment de nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux. Dans cet équilibre entre exploitation et conservation, American River illustre les enjeux propres aux territoires insulaires : préserver les ressources tout en maintenant une activité économique viable.

AUSTRALIA - American River, between lagoon and ocean
Located on the east coast of Kangaroo Island, in southern Australia, American River is a discreet village, facing the sea and the lagoon that borders its banks. Separated from the mainland by the Backstairs Passage Strait, Kangaroo Island is located about fifteen kilometers off the coast of South Australia, opposite the city of Adelaide. About thirty kilometers from the port of Penneshaw, the main access point to the island, American River is one of the entry points to a preserved nature, where human activities remain closely linked to the environment.
Fishing and oyster farming still structure the local daily life, while the Pelican Lagoon, a protected area, is home to a rich biodiversity, including many bird species. In this balance between exploitation and conservation, American River illustrates the challenges of island territories: preserving resources while maintaining viable economic activity.
