AUSTRALIE - Cape Jervis, porte d’entrée vers Kangaroo Island
Dans le sud de l Australie se trouve l’île de Kangaroo Island. Le ferry constitue le principal lien entre le continent avec l’île.
Le départ se fait à Cape Jervis, à l’extrémité de la péninsule de Fleurieu, là où la route s’interrompt face à la mer. Cape Jervis marque l’extrémité sud de la péninsule de Fleurieu. Cape Jervis est un point de fin de terre et de bascule maritime, où un golfe (Gulf Saint Vincent) relativement calme rencontre des eaux ouvertes plus instables du Backstairs Passage, créant un espace à la fois stratégique et exposé.
L’embarcadère en travaux d’agrandissement en 2025 ne changé pas le quotidien des navettes. Quelques bâtiments, un terminal, puis l’horizon. Rien de spectaculaire, sinon cette impression d’être déjà au bord de quelque chose.
Ici, le ferry constitue le principal lien avec Kangaroo Island — le seul moyen d’y accéder avec un véhicule. L’embarquement est simple, presque fonctionnel, rythmé par les manœuvres et le vent venu du large.
On monte à bord sans transition nette, comme si le voyage avait déjà commencé avant même de quitter la terre. Puis, lentement, le quai s’éloigne, et avec lui, le continent.

In the south of Australia is the island of Kangaroo Island. The ferry is the main link between the continent and the island.
The departure is at Cape Jervis, at the end of the Fleurieu Peninsula, where the road is interrupted facing the sea. Cape Jervis marks the southern end of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Cape Jervis is an end of land and maritime tipping point, where a relatively calm Gulf (Gulf Saint Vincent) meets more unstable open waters of the Backstairs Passage, creating a space that is both strategic and exposed.
The pier in expansion work in 2025 did not change the daily life of shuttles. A few buildings, a terminal, then the horizon. Nothing spectacular, except this impression of already being on the verge of something.
Here, the ferry is the main link to Kangaroo Island — the only way to get there with a vehicle. Boarding is simple, almost functional, punctuated by maneuvers and the wind from the sea.
We board without a clear transition, as if the journey had already begun even before leaving the earth. Then, slowly, the quay moves away, and with it, the continent.
