Gabrielle Chanel, future Coco Chanel, a passé une partie de son enfance à l’orphelinat de l’abbaye d’Aubazine. Élevée dans la rigueur et la sobriété cisterciennes, elle y découvre un univers fait de simplicité, de noir et de blanc, et de lignes épurées. Cette atmosphère austère aurait durablement marqué son sens de l’esthétique et influencé le style qui fera plus tard la renommée de Coco Chanel. On retrouve d’ailleurs dans certaines de ses créations — notamment l’usage du noir, la simplicité des formes et le motif du double C — une inspiration que beaucoup relient à l’architecture et aux vitraux de l’abbaye d’Aubazine.

Gabrielle Chanel, the future Coco Chanel, spent part of her childhood at the Aubazine Abbey orphanage. Raised in the strict and sober Cistercian tradition, she discovered a world of simplicity, black and white, and clean lines. This austere atmosphere had a lasting impact on her sense of aesthetics and influenced the style that would later make Coco Chanel famous. Some of her creations—notably her use of black, simple shapes and the double C motif—show an inspiration that many link to the architecture and stained glass windows of Aubazine Abbey.
