Wilson, marcher du jour vers la nuit
Wilson, située en Caroline du Nord, aux États-Unis, a longtemps été façonnée par l’industrie du tabac « bright leaf ». De la culture au tri, jusqu’au stockage et au commerce, elle est devenue un important marché du tabac au début et au milieu du XXe siècle.
Avec le déclin de cette industrie, les systèmes traditionnels de vente aux enchères et de commerce ont rapidement disparu. Les entrepôts ont fermé, habitants et commerçants ont quitté les lieux, et l’économie ainsi que l’organisation spatiale de la ville se sont transformées. Aujourd’hui, des bâtiments industriels murés et des maisons et commerces vacants subsistent dans les rues. Il ne s’agit pas de signes isolés de déclin, mais de traces laissées par le retrait d’une industrie, un état intermédiaire entre abandon et possible réutilisation, qui façonne le paysage contemporain de la ville.
J’y ai séjourné un mois en 2023, parcourant la ville à pied chaque jour, documentant ces espaces vacants dans une démarche d’archive, tout en enregistrant les scènes du quotidien et les rythmes du bourg du jour à la nuit.
Wilson, Walking from Day into Night
Wilson, located in North Carolina, United States, was long shaped by the “bright leaf” tobacco industry. From cultivation and grading to storage and trade, it became a major tobacco market in the early to mid-20th century.
As the industry declined, the traditional auction and trading system rapidly disappeared. Warehouses closed, residents and businesses moved away, and the city’s economy and spatial structure shifted accordingly. Today, boarded-up industrial buildings and vacant houses and shops remain visible throughout the streets. These are not isolated signs of decline, but traces left by the retreat of an industry, a condition suspended between abandonment and potential reuse, forming the contemporary landscape of the city.
I stayed there for a month in 2023, walking through the town each day, documenting these vacant spaces in an archival approach, as well as recording everyday scenes and observing the town’s rhythms from day into night.
