Tahiti - 2022 Matari'i i ni'a celebration by tahua Raymond Graffe
November 20 is the day when the Pleiades constellation enters the South Pacific's sky for six months. This season is called by Polynesian people
Matari'i i ni'a, which litterally means "the Pleiades are up",
Matari'i being the Polynesian name for the Pleiades. This is the rainy season and thus the season of plenty. That is the reason why the first day of Matari'i i ni'a is celebrated as it used to bring back the good harvests. The first day of 2022 Matari'i i nia was celebrated by the tahua Raymond Graffe, a traditional priest, around a bonfire in the gardens of the Museum of Tahiti and the islands, where the public was invited to make offerings to Mother Nature (fruit from their first harvest, flowers, cordyline leaves...).
