Vaccination in GAZA
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Gaza Strip has seen more than 122,520 infections and 1,125 deaths while the total number of people vaccinated (on the 29th of August 2021) has reached the 181,271 people above 18 years old (according to health officials). Gaza counts 2,048 millions people.
Although the vaccine against the Covid19 is available for the Gazan of any age since March 2021, residents are concerned about possible harm caused by it. Many rumors are circulating on social media blaming the vaccine to be a threat that could lead to death. Those rumors come from cases of patients who died after receiving their dose although it wasn?t clarified if it was caused by the jab or something else.
« Nowadays, most of the people asking for the vaccine are people obliged to get it by their work or student in medicine. Today, I vaccinated a trader of fruits and vegetables who is allowed to enter Israel but only if he has his vaccine certificate », explains Wissam Ayad, nurse at the Subha Harazin hospital in Shujaiya. Although Wissam is encouraging people to get vaccinated, she refused to get it ?I know the side effects, it scares me? tells Wissam.
The war of May 2021 also had an impact on the vaccination campaign, « people forgot about Covid19, they were more scared of being killed by a shelling. And that idea stayed in their mind like if, suddenly, the virus disappeared with the war » said Mahmoud Moahmmed El Ramli, assistant manager at the Subha Harazin hospital.
In coordination with the Ministry of Health of Gaza, the UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) is also playing an important rol in the fight against Covid19. When the governmental hospital suspended all their other activities to threat patients of Covid19, the UNRWA suggested taking in charges those cares such as surgeries or treatment of cancer for refugees and non-refugees. Nowadays, the UNRWA is also in charge of the vaccination and has 18 of its stations open for it. But the Chief of Field Health program, Dr. Ghada Al Jadba, is scared that the low vaccination rate in Gaza will bring to a third wave in the enclave. « In Gaza, only 8,6% of the population above 18 years old is vaccinated. The main rumors on social media is that if anybody dies after the first shot of the vaccination, I?ts automatically due to the vaccine. Same if someone got Covid19 after his/her first shot, it means that it?s not efficient at all. (Although we know that the first dose for Pfizer for example, is not enough?.). People also think that the vaccine is a virus itself, but they don?t have the right information or education about it. People are very stubborn and resisting to get the vaccine due to the social media ? says Dr. Ghada. The media and several NGO?s such as Doctors Without Borders are trying to convince people to get vaccinated through awareness campaigns that counter the rumors and fake news on social media. But ?anyway, people are also traumatized by the last war and their priorities are not the Covid19 but how to survive after that war? says Dr. Ghada.
