LE SOLDAT, LE VIOLON ET LE DIABLE. HISTOIRE LUE, JOUÉE, MIMÉE ET DANSÉE. L’Histoire du soldat est une oeuvre de circonstance, écrite et composée en Suisse pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Le contexte ne permet plus de créer des oeuvres à grand effectif, avec d’importants moyens de production. Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz et Igor Stravinsky pensent donc, à quatre mains, un dispositif nouveau. L’Histoire du soldat est une pièce de théâtre de tréteaux qui, au départ, mêle un petit orchestre de foire (sept instruments), des récitants (le Lecteur, le Soldat et le Diable) et un ou deux danseurs. Selon les dires de Ramuz s’adressant à son mécène, c’est « […] quelque chose comme une lanterne magique animée.

THE SOLDIER, THE VIOLIN, AND THE DEVIL. A STORY READ, PLAYED, MIMED, AND DANCED. The Soldier's Tale is a circumstantial work, written and composed in Switzerland during the First World War. The context no longer allowed for the creation of large-scale works with significant production resources. Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz and Igor Stravinsky therefore devised a new system, working together. The Soldier's Tale is a stage play that, initially, combines a small fairground orchestra (seven instruments), narrators (the Reader, the Soldier, and the Devil), and one or two dancers. According to Ramuz, speaking to his patron, it is "[…] something like an animated magic lantern."
