LES CAPRICES DE MARIANNE
Le jeune Cœlio rêve de conquérir Marianne, épouse du juge Claudio. N'osant l'aborder, il tente d'abord d'utiliser l'entremise de la vieille Ciuta, qui n'obtient rien de la jeune femme que l'affirmation de sa fidélité conjugale.
Cœlio se tourne vers un autre entremetteur, son ami Octave, bon-vivant et libertin et cousin du mari de Marianne, Claudio. Marianne reste indifférente à Cœlio, mais tombe amoureuse d'Octave ; elle lui dévoile son amour à mots couverts et lui fixe un rendez-vous. Octave, d'abord indécis, choisit la loyauté et envoie Cœlio au rendez-vous obtenu.
Cependant, Claudio soupçonne l'infidélité de sa femme et engage des spadassins pour tuer tout amant qui s'approcherait de la maison. Cœlio tombe dans le guet-apens et, mourant, peut croire à la trahison de son ami en entendant Marianne, trompée par l'obscurité, l'accueillir du nom d'Octave. Octave, accablé, renonce à sa vie de plaisirs et repousse sèchement l'amour que lui déclare Marianne.
LES CAPRICES DE MARIANNE
Young Coelio dreams of conquering Marianne, wife of the judge Claudio. Not daring to approach her, he first tries to use the mediation of old Ciuta, who obtains nothing from the young woman except the affirmation of her marital fidelity.
Coelio turns to another go-between, his friend Octave, a bon vivant and libertine and cousin of Marianne's husband, Claudio. Marianne remains indifferent to Coelio, but falls in love with Octave; she reveals her love to him in veiled terms and sets him up on a date. Octave, at first undecided, chooses loyalty and sends Coelio to the date obtained.
However, Claudio suspects his wife's infidelity and hires thugs to kill any lover who approaches the house. Cœlio falls into the ambush and, dying, can believe in the betrayal of his friend when he hears Marianne, deceived by the darkness, greet him with the name of Octave. Octave, overwhelmed, renounces his life of pleasure and curtly rejects the love that Marianne declares to him.
