Le travail d'Olivier Culmann est traversé par les questions récurrentes de la liberté et du conditionnement.
Dans les années 90, il parcourt plusieurs pays pour photographier Les Mondes de l'école, un travail sur l'institution scolaire, les assujettissements et les insoumissions qui y naîtront.
Sa photographie interroge, toujours sur le fil du dérisoire et l'absurde, l'existence ou l'absence de choix. Avec Une Vie de poulet, cette démarche associe plus ouvertement encore l'humour à la narration. Il y associe deux reportages mis en regard, l'un sur une chaîne industrielle de volailles et l'autre sur les derniers appelés du contingent.
Le passage, au début des années 2000, au moyen format s'impose avec la recherche d'une distance nouvelle. Au lendemain des attentats du 11 septembre, il réalise Autour, New York 2001-2002. Cette série, produite à New York, est consacrée aux spectateurs de l'après-événement, Américains ou touristes venus scruter les ruines du World Trade Center. Les expressions fixées par le photographe fonctionnent ici en miroirs de notre propre sidération face à la catastrophe.
Puis il construit, dans plusieurs endroits du monde où il choisit d'habiter, une observation des téléspectateurs. Constat de l'état des corps et des âmes face aux échos du monde filtrés par les écrans. La série Watching TV constitue une étape dans son travail de mise en abyme du regard.
À partir de 2010, il formalise une recherche sur les modes de représentation de soi. Passionné par l'imagerie populaire et les codes de mise en scène de la photographie, il choisit notamment d'utiliser sa propre image pour explorer les fantasmes sociaux et ses propres interrogations sur l'altérité. Olivier Culmann est membre du collectif Tendance Flou depuis 1996.

« The Others » est un travail sur les codes sociétaux de l'inde et ses modes de représentation. Rendant compte des spécificités visuelles et vestimentaires définissant chaque indien, retranscrire la variété des éléments constituant l'identité de l'individu, religion, caste, classe sociale.
« Watching TV » : Olivier Culmann photographie des gens qui regardent la télévision captant les regards des téléspectateurs hypnotisés par les images qui défilent sur l'écran.
« Autour » est une série suite aux attentats du 11 novembre 2001 à New York. Il a volontairement tourné le dos au lieu de l'attentat pour observer ceux qui s'en approchaient, des passants furtifs spectateurs de quelques secondes, figés, hébétés. Les américains portaient sur leurs visages les abyssales interrogations apparues avec la destruction.
« Atlantiques » Hambourg-Montréal. Dix jours en gestation à regarder la mer qui vient. Et les 1200 containers au contenu inconnu. Toute une série de photos prises au même endroit du bateau, pendant ce voyage, avec une météo très différente.
En 2016 Olivier Culmann était l'invité d?honneur des rencontres de la jeune photographie internationale Niort. Ceci a été très enrichissant car pour lui, chaque artiste n'est pas seul dans son univers mais en côtoie d'autres, au delà de la qualité photographique, il y a une différence d'approche. C'est une résidence internationale, avec des sensibilités et des cultures différentes dans un monde photographique qui ne cesse d'évoluer. Chaque nouveau projet photographique remet en cause le précédent.

Born in 1970 in Paris. Olivier Culmann has been a photographer since 1992.
Olivier Culmann's work is permeated by the recurrent questions of freedom and conditioning.
In the 1990s, he travelled to several countries to photograph Les Mondes de l'école, a work on the school institution, the subjection and insubordination that would emerge there.
His photography always questions, always on the thread of derision and absurdity, the existence or absence of choice. With Une Vie de poulet, this approach more openly combines humour with narrative. He associates two reports, one on an industrial poultry chain and the other on the last conscripts in the contingent.
The transition to medium format at the beginning of the 2000s was essential with the search for a new distance. In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, he directed Autour, New York 2001-2002. This series, produced in New York, is dedicated to post-event spectators, Americans or tourists who have come to examine the ruins of the World Trade Center. The expressions fixed by the photographer function here as mirrors of our own amazement in the face of the disaster.
Then he builds, in several places in the world where he chooses to live, an observation of the viewers. Observation of the state of bodies and souls in front of the world's echoes filtered by the screens. The Watching TV series is a step in his work to bring the gaze to abyss.
From 2010, he will formalize research on modes of self-representation. Passionate about popular imagery and photography staging codes, he chose to use his own image to explore social fantasies and his own questions about otherness. Olivier Culmann has been a member of the Tendance Flou collective since 1996.

His photographic work analyses with millimetre sharpness the question of our daily lives and our relationship with images.
"The Others" is a work on India's societal codes and modes of representation? Reflecting the visual and clothing specificities defining each Indian, transcribing the variety of elements constituting the identity of the individual, religion, caste, social class.
"Watching TV": Olivier Culmann photographs people watching television capturing the glances of viewers hypnotized by the images that scroll across the screen.
"Around" is a series following the attacks of 11 November 2001 in New York. He deliberately turned his back on the scene of the attack to observe those who were approaching it, stealthy passers-by who were spectators for a few seconds, frozen and dazed. The Americans carried on their faces the abyssal questions that appeared with the destruction.
"Atlantic" Hamburg-Montreal. Ten days in gestation looking at the coming sea. And the 1200 containers with unknown contents. A whole series of photos taken at the same place on the boat, during this trip, with a very different weather.
In 2016 Olivier Culmann was the guest of honour at the meetings of the young international photographer Niort. This has been very enriching because for him, each artist is not alone in his universe but rubs shoulders with others, beyond the photographic quality, there is a difference in approach. It is an international residence, with different sensibilities and cultures in a photographic world that is constantly evolving. Each new photographic project challenges the previous one.
