Le 28 novembre 2025, 6 mois après l'annonce de sa dissolution, ouvrant la voie à une paix durable avec la Turquie, le PKK célèbre son 47e anniversaire, niché dans son fief des monts Qandil, au Kurdistan irakien. Thomas Noonan a obtenu un rare accès aux célébrations alors que le PKK n'avait pas reçu de journalistes étrangers depuis une décennie. Ses photos témoignent d'un mouvement qui, bien qu'officiellement dissous, célèbre ce qu'il perçoit comme une grande victoire politique, entre danses traditionnelles, chants et commémorations des victimes de 5 décennies de guerre. Pour la première fois, les célébrations n'ont pas été perturbées par des frappes Turques, et les supporters civils du mouvement ont pu célébrer main dans la main avec les guerilleros.

On November 28, 2025, 6 months after announcing its dissolution to open the road towards durable peace with Turkey, the PKK celebrates its 47th anniversary tucked in its safe haven in the Qandil mountains in Iraqi Kurdistan. Thomas Noonan negotiated rare access to the celebrations even as the PKK had not received foreign journalists in nearly a decade. His photographs bear witness to a movement which, although officially dissolved, celebrates what it perceives as a great political victory, through traditional dances, songs, and commemorations of the victims of 5 decades of war. For the first time, the celebrations are not disturbed by Turkish strikes, and the civilian supporters of the movement can celebrate hand in hand with the guerrilla fighters.
