Zanele Muholi at the MEP
Being a woman, black and lesbian in South Africa pushed Zanele Muholi early on into activist photography (or photographic activism). Remember that apartheid was only abolished in 1994 (she was 22 years old), and although South Africa has been forward-thinking in allowing gay marriage since 2006, "corrective rapes" still occur.
Documenting the LGBTQIA+ community in her country, this activist artist is now an iconic photographer prized by galleries and institutions.
The European House of Photography is dedicating a retrospective to her from February 1 to May 21, 2023.
