In search of adrenaline
They come from the Soummam Valley in Kabylia, in part, others come from the interior of the country, the Highlands where the summer temperature beats all records in the Mediterranean basin. They are aged between 15 and 25 years. A youth that is thirsty to live, to express itself, to be recognized, estimated, valued, taken in charge. They rent buses and trucks to reach the "Platform", the carcass of a large building flirting with the sea in Boulimat, a seaside resort located in the department of Béjaia in Kabylia (200 km east of Algiers, Algeria). A project that should house a hotel-bar-restaurant and which was stopped by the public authorities during the Black Decade of the 1990s for lack of building permits according to residents. They flock there by tens in search of strong sensations, to the height of their frustrations born from the absence of leisure and spaces of multiform expressions all year long. This also comes for the first time after two long years of confinement, consequence of Covid-19. They have fun by putting their lives in danger, by throwing themselves into the water sometimes from a floor, sometimes from the upper terrace of the building in question. As for the sharp rocks that emerge from the water here and there and in the middle of which one dives, one does not make a fuss. Satisfying a certain need for escape is far more important. Then a moment of respite in the shade around a few beers, a Chicha and so much for the detritus and shards of bottles that litter each piece of this space that they have squatted to make their resort for a day. The discussions turn essentially around the prowess of the ones and the others in the art of the dive. Tomorrow is another day.
