FRANCE-OVERSEAS-MARQUESAS ISLANDS-GARNET PHONOLITE AKA FLOWER STONES
Garnet phonolite carving, on July 25, 2024 in Hakahau, Ua Pou island, Marquesas, French Polynesia. In French Polynesia (Pacific Ocean), on the island of Ua Pou, sculptors use ancestral techniques to bring out all the beauty of garnet phonolite. Different from the others, this volcanic igneous rock is here mixed with garnet. The encrustation of minerals gives the impression of seeing petals appear in the stone. Extremely rare, it has been identified in only a few places around the world: in French Polynesia, Brazil, Ethiopia and in the Massif Central (France, Europe). There are several colors of garnet phonolite: black, yellow and red. In the Marquesas archipelago, the rock is cut and then sculpted in the shape of a bowl, a tiki or marine animals.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee will hold its 46th session from July 21 to 31, 2024 in New Delhi (India). It will examine the nominations of 27 sites for inclusion on the World Heritage List, including Te Henua Enata - Les Iles Marquises (Marquesas Islands) presented by France.
