Un myelome me dit-on. Apparemment seulement. Pas cette fois en tout cas. 7 jours auront suffi a emporter mon pere.
Paul Eluard
The light is always close to going out
A call from my mother while I'm having lunch in the sun after my physiotherapy session. It's about my father. Silence at the other end of the line. Silence at the end of the phone is chilling. Well, there are worse things than silence. There is the "What can I tell you..." just before the silence sets in. The first plane doesn't leave until the next morning. I meet my father again. Lying in a medical bed, weakened and in terrible pain. I had left him in great shape a few weeks before. A myeloma, I am told. Or Kahler's disease. In the doctors' jargon. So that's what the silence was about. Apparently there's no real cure, but you can ease the pain. And live a few years. Apparently only. Not this time anyway. 7 days were enough to take my father away. 7 days is a short time to say goodbye. It's not long enough to say I love you. But it's just enough to read Eluard again... because, yes, the light is always close to going out.
Dit de la Force et de l'Amour
Between all my torments between death and me
Between my despair and the reason to live
There is injustice and the misfortune of men
That I cannot admit there is my anger
There is the blood-coloured maquis of Spain
There is the maquis of Greece, the colour of the sky
Bread, blood, sky and the right to hope
For all the innocents who hate evil
The light is always close to going out
Life always prepares to become dung
But spring is reborn and it's not over yet
A bud comes out of the dark and the heat sets in
And the heat will get the better of the selfish
Their atrophied senses will not resist it
I hear the fire talking, laughing at the lukewarmness
I hear a man say that he has not suffered
You who were the sensitive conscience of my flesh
You whom I love forever, you who invented me
You couldn't stand oppression or insult
You sang while dreaming of happiness on earth
You dreamed of being free and I continue you.
Paul Eluard
