Pourtant, sa culture perdure en se transformant dans plusieurs quartiers de la capitale, entre pratiques rituelles, musique et danse. Dans un contexte politique marqué par le régime militaire de Mamadi Doumbouya, la déesse Nimba, figure majeure du peuple Baga, qui incarnait déjà la représentation nationale guinéenne, est réinvestie dans le branding national et voit son usage symbolique amplifié. Entre visibilité accrue et risque de récupération, ce reportage interroge la place d’une mémoire vivante face à un pouvoir en quête de légitimité.
NIMBA: A BAGA MEMORY TESTED BY POWER
In Guinea, the Baga people have seen their historical territories absorbed by the expansion of Conakry. Yet their culture endures, adapting in several neighborhoods of the capital through ritual practices, music, and dance. In a political context marked by Mamadi Doumbouya’s military regime, the goddess Nimba, a major figure of the Baga people and long a symbol of Guinean national identity, is being reinvested into national branding and her symbolic use has been amplified. Between greater visibility and the risk of appropriation, this reportage examines the place of a living memory in the face of a power seeking legitimacy.
