Le Taarab de Siti Muharam - Héritage de sa grand-mère
Siti Muharam est venue jouer de la musique taarab au Festival de la Cité 2023 à Lausanne. Selon les historiens, cette musique a été importée d'Egypte à la fin du 19ème siècle pour la cour des sultans omanais établie à Zanzibar. A la fin des années 1920, Sinti Binti Saad, la grand-mère de Siti Muharam, a enregistré en Inde pour la première fois de la musique taarab chantée par une femme en swahili, la langue millénaire d'Afrique de l'Est. Sur les rives de l'océan indien, cette musique a absorbé toutes les influences, depuis les instruments indiens de Bollywood au tashkota japonais, le tout soutenu par une puissante polyrythmie africaine.
Siti Muharam's Taarab music - The grandmother's legacy
Siti Muharam performed taarab music at the Festival de la Cité 2023 in Lausanne. Historians believe that the music was imported from Egypt in the late 19th century for the court of the Omani sultans settled in Zanzibar. In the late 1920s, Sinti Binti Saad, Siti Muharam's grandmother, made in India the first recording of taarab music sung by a woman in Swahili, the millenia-old language of East Africa. On the shores of the Indian Ocean, this music has absorbed every influence, from the Bollywood?s Indian instruments to the Japanese tashkota, all sustained by powerful African polyrhythms.
