Mulatu Astatke - Mulatu of Ethiopia
L'histoire de Mulatu Astatke est une sorte de road movie qui commence 40 ans avant que Broken Flowers de Jim Jarmusch ne remporte le Grand Prix du Festival de Cannes 2005 avec sa bande son Ethio-Jazz. Mulatu produit en 1966 deux albums qu'il nomme Afro-Latin Soul, avec en parallèle des singles en Éthiopie. Quelques années plus tard, deux albums introduisent l'Ethio-Jazz, qui deviendra sa marque de fabrique. A la fin des années 1990, les compilations françaises Les Ethiopiques feront découvrir l'Ethio-Jazz aux mélomanes, dont Jim Jarmusch. Mulatu Astatke s'est produit au Cully Jazz Festival 2023 avec son groupe formé de James Arben (sax), Byron Wallen (tp), Danny Keane (cello), Nicholas David (pno), John Edwards (bas), Richard Olatunde Baker (perc) et Jon Scott (drms).

Mulatu produced two albums in 1966, which he called Afro-Latin Soul, with singles in Ethiopia. A few years later, two albums introduced Ethio-Jazz, music that would become his trademark. In the late 1990s, the French CD compilations Les Ethiopiques introduced Ethio-Jazz to music lovers, including Jim Jarmusch. Mulatu Astatke performed at the Cully Jazz Festival 2023 with his band featuring James Arben (sax), Byron Wallen (tp), Danny Keane (cello), Nicholas David (pno), John Edwards (bass), Richard Olatunde Baker (perc) and Jon Scott (drms).
