Cuba, an Orwellian collective building
A concrete, 16 story, Soviet style collective housing building built in the 70s in Havana, Cuba, is the home of thousand of people. The building is slowly falling apart. The elevators have been out of order for several years now, forcing people to take the narrow staircases up 16 flights, which are also very damaged with dangerous open gaps at places. You cannot live here if you suffer from vertigo. Concrete tunnels unite the three towers which form this Orwellian residence. The whole edifice seems like an ant nest with galeries and narrow passages. Small openings in the structure allow limited views on the Malecon and the sea.
The US has imposed an economic embargo on Cuba since 1962. The Cuban socialist and revolutionary government had taken power three years earlier overthrowing Batista’s dictatorship which had the US support. This embargo has been reenforced since the US intervention in Venezuela in January 2026. The US cut off Cuba from its major petrol supplier, provoking an unprecedented energy, economic and political crisis on the island. Since then, President Trump has been menacing to invade the country and change the regime.
