Reconnu pour son charisme scénique et sa virtuosité au guembri, Maâlem Omar Hayat est un artiste qui conjugue avec brio héritage gnaoui et modernité. Initié à cet art par le légendaire Mahmoud Gania, il fonde son propre groupe en 1991, affirmant rapidement une identité musicale singulière. S’il reste profondément ancré dans la tradition gnaouie, Maâlem Omar Hayat n’hésite pas à explorer d’autres univers. En 2011, il collabore avec la troupe de hip-hop La Halla KingZoo à Essaouira, puis en 2016, il se produit avec DJ Rupture au célèbre Frost Festival de Copenhague. Habitué des grandes scènes, il captive chaque année le public du Festival Gnaoua et Musiques du Monde d’Essaouira, notamment lors de collaborations mémorables : en 2008 avec le trompettiste Ibrahim Maalouf, en 2009 avec le pianiste Meddy Gerville, et en 2015 avec le groupe Mikkel Nordso Band.

Renowned for his stage presence and virtuosity on the guembri, Maâlem Omar Hayat is an artist who brilliantly combines Gnaoui heritage with modernity. Introduced to this art form by the legendary Mahmoud Gania, he founded his own group in 1991, quickly establishing a unique musical identity. While remaining deeply rooted in the Gnaoui tradition, Maâlem Omar Hayat does not hesitate to explore other worlds. In 2011, he collaborated with the hip-hop troupe La Halla KingZoo in Essaouira, then in 2016, he performed with DJ Rupture at the famous Frost Festival in Copenhagen. A regular on the big stage, he captivates audiences every year at the Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival, notably through memorable collaborations: in 2008 with trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, in 2009 with pianist Meddy Gerville, and in 2015 with the Mikkel Nordso Band.
