USA - THE NEW ORLEANS CARNIVAL
The New Orleans Carnival is one of the largest carnivals in the world and the most important event in Louisiana. It was introduced by the first French settlers at the end of the 17th century. It's a religious holiday and takes place 47 days before Easter. Carnival and "Mardi Gras" - in French and not Fat Tuesday - complement each other: the former refers to the period beginning in January and the latter to the period before the Wednesday of the beginning of Lent. Mardi Gras celebrates the end of the "7 fat days".
This year, from 6 January to 25 February hundreds of thousands of visitors were able to attend this new edition. Buildings and houses were decorated with tricolour flags: purple, gold, green, the official colours that symbolise power, justice and faith. Festivities, parades, balls, concerts, Kings Cakes and community spirit took over the city. The economic impact is estimated at $840 million annually.
