Quartier EUR- ROME
Le quartier EUR (pour Esposizione Universale di Roma) a été construit dans la banlieue sud de Rome à la fin des années 1930 en l’honneur de Benito Mussolini, alors chef de l’État italien. Destiné à accueillir l’Exposition universelle de 1942, l’EUR devait être une vitrine de l’Italie fasciste. Il s’agit d’un des exemples les plus significatifs de l’architecture totalitaire, où tout est destiné à glorifier le régime politique fasciste et son maître à penser, tout en célébrant le passé glorieux du pays. Le Gouvernement italien a décidé, depuis plusieurs années déjà, d'édifier à Rome, en 1942, une exposition grandiose, qui commémorera le vingtième anniversaire du régime actuel, et manifestera la puissance et la prospérité du pays. Une loi du 26 décembre 1936 en a fixé le programme et l’organisation.
EUR district- ROMA
The EUR district (short for Esposizione Universale di Roma) was built in the southern suburbs of Rome in the late 1930s in honour of Benito Mussolini, then Head of State of Italy. Intended to host the 1942 World’s Fair, the EUR was meant to be a showcase for Fascist Italy. It is one of the most significant examples of totalitarian architecture, where everything is designed to glorify the fascist political regime and its ideological leader, whilst celebrating the country’s glorious past. Several years ago, the Italian Government decided to stage a grand exhibition in Rome in 1942, which would commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the current regime and demonstrate the country’s power and prosperity. A law of 26 December 1936 laid down the programme and organisation.
