Between April 15 and 16, 2019, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris was ravaged by a devastating fire that lasted almost 15 hours. The fire started in the roof structure in the late afternoon and spread rapidly. Damage was considerable: total destruction of the spire, nave and transept roofs, and roof timbers; partial collapse of the vaults, notably at the transept crossing, in the north arm and in one bay of the nave; minor damage to the belfry of the north tower, with a weakened bell support and a burnt staircase. This event had a profound effect on the history of this emblematic Parisian monument.
