Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The Assumption, called Dormition in Eastern tradition, is the Christian belief that the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, at the end of her earthly life, entered directly into the glory of God, in other words, "ascended into heaven". This belief has no scriptural basis, but is in line with a long-standing tradition in both Eastern and Western churches, and has been celebrated liturgically since the 7th century. In the Catholic Church, it was defined as dogma. In the Catholic Church, the Assumption is celebrated liturgically on August 15, often accompanied by processions.
