Rivesaltes Camp Memorial
Originally a military camp, it was used between 1941-1942, 1945-1948 and 1962-1966 as a place of detention by the French state. Spanish Republicans, Jews and Gypsies made up the bulk of the population detained by administrative internment from January 1941. In the autumn of 1942, the Rivesaltes camp was even the inter-regional centre for the gathering and deportation of Jews from the southern zone, what Serge Klarsfeld called "the Drancy of the southern zone". After the Liberation, after having received, for some time, collaboration suspects, it became an important
collaboration, it became an important camp for German prisoners of war. The Rivesaltes camp was later drawn into the history of the Algerian war, serving as a prison for FLN fighters, then becoming the main centre for the harkis after the Evian agreements. Another symbol of the aftermath of decolonisation, when the last harkis left in 1964, Guinean, Malagasy and Vietnamese soldiers were demobilised at the Rivesaltes camp.
