THOMAS BOULOU COLLECTIVE - "MALE" CONTRACEPTION
The "Thomas Boulou" collective, founded in 2015, located at "la Baleine" (a self-managed shared space in Quimper), informs about the taboo subject of so-called "male" contraception and advocates individual or shared responsibility.
In France, the mental burden of contraception is mainly borne by women, whereas men are fertile all their lives. The same applies to "permanent" contraception. However, it is more widely used by men in Anglo-Saxon countries than in France, where it has been authorised since 2001. It is also women who in France have the most recourse to voluntary sterilisation.
However, various so-called "male" contraceptive methods exist: The condom, the hormonal method, the vasectomy and the thermal methods: the andro switch (ring), the "remonte couilles toulousin" or "boulocho" briefs, the "jockstrap",.
Vasectomy is a so-called "definitive" method which consists of cutting the channels that lead the spermatozoa into the semen.
The thermal method, which is natural and reversible, has existed since the 1990s. It consists of raising the testicles using a jock strap, a slip or an andro switch (ring) so that the production of spermatozoa (controlled by spermograms) is less than 1 million /ml thanks to the heat. The user must wear the device for 15 hours a day. The method is generally effective after three months.
In 1979, the Association for Research and Development of Male Contraception (ARDECOM) was created. Dr Roger Mieusset, an andrologist in Toulouse, showed the impact of testicular reflux on fertility in 1985. In 2018, Maxime Labrit created the andro-switch. In 2021, the sale of the ring on the internet was suspended, while waiting for it to be approved by European regulations. Clinical studies have been conducted for 40 years, proving the reliability of the method.
Thermal contraceptive methods are currently not available on the French market. But with the Thomas Boulou collective in Quimper, you can test and make your own briefs, jockstraps and rings. The collective is open every first Saturday of the month to discuss contraception, gender equality, male violence, talk about their experiences, read spermograms and give testimony. Christian Balaud, Aurélien Le Gal, Florina and Nicolas, active members of the collective, help create thermal contraceptive devices. Rings are made of silicone, briefs and jock straps are sewn and can be made from recycled bras.
Other collectives raising awareness on the issue of testicular contraception exist in France, and Thomas Boulou has helped set up offices in other Breton towns. The collective is financed by the regional council and the ARS, among others. They work in collaboration with ARDECOM and the family planning. Thomas Boulou organises events such as the screening of the documentary film "Haut les couilles" by Sidonie Hadoux and public presentations at festivals. In March 2023, they will accompany Bobika, author and cartoonist of the comic book "Le coeur des Zobs", himself a member of the "Treizeticules" collective from Marseille, on his promotional tour of Brittany.
