Following in Roger's footsteps, a walking distiller
Roger Pompougnac, 77 years old, is a travelling distiller: he transforms fruit into alcoholic liquor like the alchemist turns lead into gold. Preceded by his still, he runs the countryside from October to May, passing from one hamlet to another without ever turning around. Customers everywhere are waiting for him with the same unashamed impatience. Roger, the Messiah, does not multiply breads, but litres of pear alcohol, grapes, cherries or even apple. Its rates have the advantage of being reasonable.
The job of a boilermaker is not an easy one. You have to love the mud, the crazy herbs, the sticky hands because of the sugar that puffs up from the boiling still. But the warmth of the men, the virile handshakes at the foot of the caravan and the respect of the word given make us forget the difficulty of the work. Thirty years since the still continued to whistle for Roger Pompougnac.
