Une journée avec Bernard Uthurry, maire d'Oloron-Sainte-Marie
À l’aube des prochaines élections municipales, Bernard Uthurry s’apprête à clore son second mandat à la tête d’Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Rien ne prédestinait cet ancien professeur d’EPS, devenu directeur du service départemental de l’Union Nationale du Sport Scolaire, à se lancer en politique. Repéré pour son engagement et ses qualités humaines, il devient il y a trente ans adjoint au maire chargé des sports. Depuis, la passion de servir ne l’a jamais quitté.
Aujourd’hui, Bernard Uthurry incarne ces élus locaux pour qui l’engagement est un marathon quotidien : réunions matinales, rendez-vous à la chaîne, apparitions publiques… Ses journées, commencées à l’aube et terminées tard le soir, se déroulent pour l’essentiel à l’abri des regards, derrière les portes de l’hôtel de ville. Alors que de plus en plus d’élus témoignent d’un épuisement grandissant, savons-nous vraiment ce que vivent celles et ceux qui façonnent la vie de nos communes ?

On the eve of the upcoming municipal elections, Bernard Uthurry is preparing to conclude his second term as mayor of Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Nothing predestined this former physical education teacher, who became director of the departmental branch of the National Union of School Sports, to enter politics. Noticed for his commitment and human qualities, he became deputy mayor in charge of sports thirty years ago. Since then, his passion for serving others has never left him.
Today, Bernard Uthurry embodies those local officials for whom public service is a daily marathon: early morning meetings, back-to-back appointments, public appearances… His days, which start at dawn and end late at night, mostly unfold out of sight, behind the doors of city hall. While more and more elected officials speak of growing exhaustion, do we really know what those who shape the life of our communities experience?
