Soatanana, ou le village du bien
Niché dans les hautes terres du sud de Madagascar, le village de Soatanana abrite une communauté religieuse singulière, issu d’un courant protestant, née à la fin du XIXᵉ siècle autour du prédicateur Rainisoalambo. Héritiers du mouvement de réveil chrétien malgache appelé Fifohazana, ses habitants vivent selon des principes spirituels et communautaires profondément ancrés.
Ici, la foi structure chaque aspect du quotidien. Vêtus de blanc — symbole de pureté et de dévotion — les fidèles rythment leurs journées entre prières, travail des rizières et activités collectives. Chaque dimanche, le village change de visage lorsque des centaines de silhouettes blanches convergent vers l’église pour des cérémonies ferventes mêlant chants, guérisons spirituelles et rituels de délivrance.

Nestled in the highlands of southern Madagascar, the village of Soatanana is home to a unique religious community, rooted in a Protestant tradition, which emerged in the late 19th century around the preacher Rainisoalambo. As heirs to the Malagasy Christian revival movement known as Fifohazana, its inhabitants live according to deeply ingrained spiritual and communal principles.
Here, faith shapes every aspect of daily life. Dressed in white—a symbol of purity and devotion—the faithful structure their days around prayer, working in the rice fields, and communal activities. Every Sunday, the village transforms as hundreds of white-clad figures converge on the church for fervent ceremonies blending songs, spiritual healings, and deliverance rituals.
In Soatanana, spirituality transcends the religious sphere to become a social and territorial organization. Between mystical fervor and rural life, Soatanana illustrates how faith shapes a landscape, an identity, and a collective way of life in the heart of the Malagasy highlands.
