The New Theater Populaire: theater in rural areas
Young comedians graduating from national high schools have created in the heart of a village in Maine-et-Loire a festival of popular theater, in the tradition of the NPT. In Fontaine-Guérin, a small village in Maine-et-Loire, a troupe was formed ten years ago on the foundations of an outdoor festival. The New Popular Theater was given in reference to the institution Vilar conducted between 1951 and 1963, the National Popular Theater (NPT). This professional troupe project in rural areas is also the mirror of a generation thirsting for ideal in a tense economic context than ever before. Initially, they were twelve. Friends, friends of friends ... The aspiring actors have rubbed the Off d'Avignon. This is where the idea of ??going to speak theater was born!
The grandmother of one of the actors has a big house in Fontaine-Guerin. In 2008, this band of young Utopians launched themselves: Some trestles are installed in the garden, posters are stuck in the villages. And a handful of curious came for the first show. 700 for this first festival which proposed Molière, Shakespeare ... In 2017, there are 10000 tickets that have been sold! And always at the same price. 5 euros. Six shows and 30 performances.
However, in 2012, when the owner of the house died, the project almost stopped. A call for donations was organized in the village. The sum was not enough to buy the house. But the community of Beaufort commune in Anjou bought the house to lend to the NTP association. A theater house is born! A scene was installed in the open air, a barn transformed into a rehearsal room ... and the house is transformed into dressing rooms, costume workshop ... And the mission remains the same: Play theater where there is little.
