FRENCH GUIANA, ENTHRONEMENT OF YOPOTO EWALD PIERRE
In the villages of the Kali'na Amerindians in French Guiana, the yopoto is the customary chief. He is not a chief in the way we might think of him in Europe; he has no real authority over the village, but rather a great deal of influence. The members of his community do not expect him to command, but to be an example of wisdom and to manage disputes between individuals or families. The yopoto is also the link between the village and the French state.
Ewald Pierre assumed this title on 30 April 2022, becoming the 3rd customary chief of the village, succeeding his grandfather and brother Julien Pierre, who died in October 2021. The enthronement ceremony took place in the village of Pierre, in the commune of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. His mother dressed him in yopoto paraphernalia: a shawl, bracelet, necklace and feather headdress. He was greeted by his peers and representatives of the State, and a traditional dance to the rhythm of the sanpula brought the ceremony to a close.
