TAIWAN - Niuua, daughter of the mountains
Niuua lives in the Kaohsiung Mountains, in Namaxia, southern Taiwan. She is a native, or aboriginal, and wants to work in wildlife conservation. Her father is Bunun and her mother Kanakanavu. One thing is particularly close to her heart: to show that her people suffered a lot when she was very young, but that they have rebuilt themselves. Indeed, from August 6 to 10, 2009, a terrible typhoon (a tropical hurricane) totally devastated their village and the surrounding area. In two days, it rained the equivalent of a whole year's worth of rain, with floods washing away 474 people and their homes. Niuua was 2 years old when it happened, she wants to show the school where her parents studied as children, and where she herself would have had to study if this tragedy had not happened. Fortunately, the natives, who are very resilient and extremely connected to nature, decided to stay in their mountains and rebuilt everything. These super-powerful typhoons are very rare, but they hover like a sword of Damocles over the inhabitants of Namasia .
Here is Niuua in her everyday life, at school and with her family, and with the animals whose ancestral legends she likes to tell.
