Les agités

Les agités est une série de photographies de portraits en noir et blanc prises dans le sous-sol d'un ancien hôpital. Avec cette série j'ai réalisé des tirages en Platine-palladium. Tirage 30×40 cm sur papier 100% coton. Tirage unique. Le mur de l'arrière-plan est griffonné de signes, de petits dessins et de mots. On peut y voir jaillir des dualités telles que « matière/lumière », « esprit/corps », « atome/univers » ainsi que des traits ou encore des oiseaux, sortes de peintures pariétales, allusions existentielles à la naissance de l'art, décor à ces portraits agités et troublants.
Les petits bâtons groupés et barrés qui occupent le mur, ainsi que l'abondance des dessins qui s'y trouvent sont autant d'indices qui nous renvoient à l'enfermement mais surtout au temps qui passe. Les scènes photographiées reprennent les âges de la vie : du nourrisson baigné dans une bassine, à l'enfant qui joue et se déguise, en passant par le jeune couple et jusqu'à la morgue. Cependant, ces scènes ne sont jouées que par des adultes, accompagnés d'accessoires, d'animaux et ostensiblement éclairés. Les scènes religieuses mais aussi les jeux de tissus, l'animal empaillé ou la canne, sont nombres de clins d'oeil à l'histoire de l'art : ne devine-t-on pas Joseph Beuys ou encore Andres Serrano dans certaines images ? De façon plus littérale, c'est la dimension sanitaire des lieux, qui, mise en relation avec le titre « Les agités », sous-entend une activité mentale débordante, voire dévorante. Nous entrevoyons ici Louise Bourgeois écrivant en 2000 « Art is guarantee of sanity » sur un fond uni rose.
Le travail d'Isabelle Souriment nous propose une réflexion sur la vie : réflexion comme matière à penser mais aussi comme matière qui réfléchit ou reflète. Matière qui nous renvoie une image universelle dont les codes et sous-entendus sont eux-mêmes réfléchis par une histoire (de l'art) commune. Les agités sont des révoltés. Selon l'étymologie première du mot, révoltés veut dire « re-tournés », ayant fait un demi-tour sur soi pour regarder derrière. Et notre animalité n'est pas loin : le jeu de mimesis de l'image qui clôt la série en témoigne. Les personnages repensent, rejouent leurs rêves ou leurs cauchemars : qu'ils se montrent pirate, danseuse, homme ficelé ou encore cadavre, la dimension cathartique du portrait est à son apogée, exorcisant dans ces jeux de mises en scène le poids des souvenirs et des années qui passent : condition si fidèle à notre humanité.

The restless ones
France, Lectoure, 2017-07-21 to 2023. Black and white series made in the former hospital of Lectoure.
Les agités is a series of black and white portrait photographs taken in the basement of an old hospital. With this series, I made prints in Platinum-palladium - 30×40 cm print on 100% cotton paper. Unique print. The wall in the background is scribbled with signs, small drawings and words. Dualities such as "matter/light", "spirit/body", "atom/universe", as well as lines or birds, can be seen springing up, a sort of parietal painting, existential allusions to the birth of art, the setting for these agitated and troubling portraits.
The small grouped and crossed-out sticks that occupy the wall and the abundance of drawings found there are all clues that refer us to the confinement but above all to the passing of time. The scenes photographed represent the ages of life: from the infant bathed in a basin, to the child playing and dressing up, to the young couple and the morgue. However, these scenes are only played by adults, accompanied by props, animals and ostensibly by lighting. The religious scenes, the play with fabrics, the stuffed animal or the cane, are all references to art history: can we not guess Joseph Beuys or Andres Serrano in some of the images? In a more literal way, it is the sanitary dimension of the places, which, in relation to the title "Les agités", implies an overflowing, even devouring mental activity. Here we glimpse Louise Bourgeois writing in 2000 "Art is a guarantee of sanity" on a plain pink background.
Isabelle Souriment's work offers us a reflection on life: reflection as a material to think about, but also as a material that reflects or reflects. The matter reflects a universal image whose codes and undertones are themselves reflected by a common (art) history. The agitated are rebels. According to the word's original etymology, revolted means "turned around", having turned around to look back. And our animality is not far away: the mimesis game of the image that closes the series bears witness to this. The characters rethink, and replay their dreams or nightmares: whether they show themselves as pirates, dancers, tied-up men or even corpses, the cathartic dimension of the portrait is at its peak, exorcising in these games of staging the weight of memories and passing years: a condition so faithful to our humanity.
