Le pari était pourtant ambitieux, peut-être trop. Le Grand Musée du Parfum souhaitait accueillir 300 000 visiteurs par an dans cet hôtel particulier anciennement occupé par la maison Christian Lacroix, pour un ticket d'entrée entre 5 et 14,50 euros. Un parcours interactif avec vidéos et dispositifs olfactifs détaillait les différents processus créatifs et scientifiques et faisait voyager le visiteur de l'Egypte antique à aujourd'hui.
Le 6 juillet 2018, le Grand Musée du Parfum, situé au 73, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré (Paris VIIIe), a annoncé sa fermeture après un an et demi seulement, via un communiqué: «Toute l'équipe du Grand Musée du Parfum a ?uvré avec passion, émotion et ferveur pour valoriser ce patrimoine et ce savoir-faire emblématiques de la culture française, au c?ur d'un lieu exceptionnel dédié au parfum et à l'art du parfumeur».
