Autour de Montpellier, les habitants se partagent entre la mer et la rivière.
Au pied des Cévennes toutes proches, la cascade de Saint Laurent le Minier accueille une foule considérable en ce dimanche, alors que le thermomètre indique 41°. On y vient surtout en famille, sauter dans la fraîcheur de la Vis, nager entre les rochers, jouer, pique niquer. L'eau douce, le charme indescriptible des Cévennes, la beauté de la cascade font à l'évidence partie des arguments...
Mais la palme revient sans doute au front de mer. A Carnon, l'une des stations préférées des Montpellierains, la fin d'après midi laisse voir un curieux manège; tandis que les touristes remballent leurs serviettes et quittent la plage, ce sont les locaux qui arrivent. Entre amis ou en famille, plus rarement seuls, les citadins s'approprient la plage, et jusqu'à une heure tardive - bien après le coucher du soleil! - profitent de la fraîcheur ( l'été, il y fait souvent au moins cinq degrés de moins qu'en ville ), partageant repas, jeux et baignades sous la lune.
Heatwave : chasing cooler spots
Around Montpellier, the inhabitants split their time between the sea and the river. At the foot of the nearby Cévennes, the Saint Laurent le Minier waterfall draws a considerable crowd this Sunday, as the thermometer reads 41°. Families come to jump into the coolness of the Vis, swim among the rocks, play, and picnic. The fresh water, the indescribable charm of the Cévennes, and the beauty of the waterfall are clearly part of the appeal...
But the palm undoubtedly goes to the waterfront. In Carnon, one of the favorite stations of the residents of Montpellier, the end of the afternoon reveals a curious scene; while tourists are packing their towels and leaving the beach, it is the locals who are arriving. Whether with friends or family, and less often alone, city dwellers make the beach their own, and until a late hour - well after sunset! - they enjoy the coolness (in summer, it is often at least five degrees cooler than in the city), sharing meals, games, and swims under the moon.
