Chaque 15 août, dans le quartier du Panier à Marseille, il y a la procession de l'Assomption, une tradition populaire dont les origines remontent au début du XIXe siècle. Après la messe célébrée à la Cathédrale de la Major, la statue dorée de la Vierge Marie est portée en procession à travers les ruelles étroites du Panier. Les habitants, fidèles et visiteurs se rassemblent le long du parcours, certains offrant des mouchoirs pour effleurer le manteau de la Vierge, geste de dévotion transmis de génération en génération. Cette fête mariale, ancrée dans la tradition des habitants du Panier, est un moment de rassemblement particulièrement pour la communauté italienne et corse, anciennes communautés qui ont longtemps habité le quartier.

Every 15 August, in the Panier district of Marseille, there is the procession of the Assumption, a popular tradition whose origins date back to the early 19th century. After the mass celebrated at the Cathedral of the Major, the golden statue of the Virgin Mary is carried in procession through the narrow streets of the Panier. The inhabitants, faithful and visitors gather along the route, some offering handkerchiefs to brush against the Virgin’s cloak, a gesture of devotion passed down from generation to generation. This Marian feast, rooted in the tradition of the inhabitants of the Panier, is a moment of gathering particularly for the Italian and Corsican community, former communities who have long inhabited the neighborhood.
