Débat au Parlement européen sur l'avenir du Royaume-Uni et un retour dans l'Union européenne
Table ronde intitulée « 10 ans après : est-il temps de mettre fin au Brexit ? », organisée par les mouvements « Europe for Scotland » et « Yes for EU » et accueillie par le groupe des Verts/ALE au Parlement européen. Réunissant un représentant de chacune des quatre nations du Royaume-Uni, le débat portait sur la question : « L’Écosse, le pays de Galles et l’Irlande du Nord peuvent-ils ramener l’Angleterre dans l’Union européenne ? »
L’événement réunissait notamment Philippa Whitford, ancienne députée britannique et ancienne porte-parole du SNP pour les affaires européennes à Westminster ; Jill Evans, ancienne députée européenne galloise ; Andrea Pisauro, représentant de « Europe for Scotland » ; Lynn Boylan, députée européenne du Sinn Féin ; et Anthony Barnett, fondateur d’openDemocracy.
Cette rencontre s’est tenue alors qu’une crise gouvernementale secouait Westminster, à la suite du retour au Parlement du maire de Manchester, Andy Burnham, élu lors de l’élection partielle de Makerfield, entraînant l’effondrement du gouvernement de Keir Starmer. Andy Burnham devait devenir le septième Premier ministre britannique depuis le référendum sur le Brexit de 2016.
Debate in the European Parliament on the future of the United Kingdom and a return to the European Union
A round-table discussion entitled ‘10 years on: is it time to put an end to Brexit?’, organised by the ‘Europe for Scotland’ and ‘Yes for EU’ movements and hosted by the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament. Bringing together a representative from each of the four nations of the United Kingdom, the debate centred on the question: “Can Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland bring England back into the European Union?”
The event featured, among others, Philippa Whitford, a former UK MP and former SNP spokesperson on European affairs in Westminster; Jill Evans, a former Welsh MEP; Andrea Pisauro, a representative of “Europe for Scotland”; Lynn Boylan, a Sinn Féin MEP; and Anthony Barnett, founder of openDemocracy.
This meeting took place whilst a government crisis was rocking Westminster, following the return to Parliament of the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, who was elected in the Makerfield by-election, leading to the collapse of Keir Starmer’s government. Andy Burnham was set to become the seventh British Prime Minister since the 2016 Brexit referendum.
