October 24: Demands in the Shadow
The high school students’ movement—joined by protests over the cost of living and the resurgence of the Yellow Vests—has been portrayed in the media primarily through instances of urban and police violence, looting, and state repression. This has cast a thick veil of invisibility over the actual demands of the protesters. As the social movement enters its second phase—with bans on demonstrations now in effect across many cities—what attention is still being paid today to the aspirations of the young people, the trade unions, and the segments of the population currently engaged in the struggle?
This report illustrates the invisibility experienced by the current social movement in France, overshadowed by the intense media spotlight on urban and police violence—violence that obscures the hopes for social justice expressed by the population.
