Symbole de la lutte pour l’indépendance pendant l’occupation française, la Casbah fut un bastion de courage et d’organisation populaire, où chaque ruelle portait un écho de liberté. Aujourd’hui encore, malgré la dégradation du bâti, elle demeure un espace habité, vibrant, où les traditions se perpétuent du port du haïk aux rituels du thé, des gestes d’hospitalité aux liens de voisinage.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Casbah of Algiers is much more than an old quarter: it is the beating heart of Algerian memory. Within its labyrinthine alleyways, white houses with sculpted doors, and steep staircases, centuries of history, resistance, and daily life intertwine.
A symbol of the struggle for independence during the French occupation, the Casbah was a bastion of courage and popular organization, where every alleyway echoed with the spirit of freedom. Even today, despite the deterioration of its buildings, it remains a vibrant, inhabited space where traditions are perpetuated, from the wearing of the haik to the rituals of tea, from gestures of hospitality to the bonds of neighborliness.
