Nag Nathaiya festival in Varanasi
Celebrated on the fourth day of Karthik Shukla Paksha (according to the Hindu calendar, around November) at Tulsi Ghat since the 16th century, the Nag Nathaiya festival is a must in Varanasi.
This episode, evoked in the Mahabharata, tells of Lord Krishna's victory over the serpent demon Kaaliya Naag during a fight in the waters of the Yamuna River, purifying it of its poison.
Every year, this scene, symbolising the victory of Good over Evil, is replayed, during which a young boy, supposedly the incarnation of the God Krishna himself, climbs up a branch of the Kadam tree, before jumping into the Ganges, where a fight with an effigy of the serpent is simulated. At the end of the fight, he will climb on his head and, assuming the pose of the God, will play the flute until he returns to the shore where he will be acclaimed.
