OUT OF SIGHT - REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS AT BELARUS-POLAND BORDER
In the Fall of 2021 refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria (among other countries) have been arriving at the Polish-Belarusian border. The area along the border was sealed off and is off limits to journalists, humanitarian organizations and is tightly controlled by the border patrol and the army, based on the emergency state declared in early September. New legislation introduced in October authorizes pushbacks even in case of asylum seekers and the most vulnerable (pregnant women, people with disabilities). In response, Granica Group, a loose federation of small NGOs, is now providing humanitarian, medical, and legal assistance to the people on the move.
They stay in touch with families of migrants in the Middle East and Africa, coordinate fundraisers, train volunteers, operate warehouses, information centers, missing persons databases and more. The entire network, as it is pitching itself against the state, echoes the Solidarity movement in the early 1980s or Polish underground state during Nazi occupation. Deep state created for noble reasons.
