La Garde républicaine à cheval est partie intégrante de la gedarmerie nationale et, à ce titre, seule unité montée de l'armée française aujourd'hui. Elle assure des missions de sécurité et d'honneur auprès des plus hautes instances de la République. Sa présence lors des réceptions de chefs d'Etat étrangers fait partie du décorum classique de la diplomatie à l'instar d'autres unités comme le Royal Horse Guard anglais dévolu à la protection de la maison du souverain anglais.

The french Republican Horse Guard is an integral part of the national gedarmerie and, as such, the only mounted unit of the French army today. It carries out security and honor missions with the highest authorities of the french Republic. Its presence during receptions of foreign heads of state is part of the classic decorum of diplomacy, like other units in the world such as the English Royal Horse Guard dedicated to the protection of the household of the English sovereign.
