New Caledonia - Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) protest in Nouméa
"France is chairing this forum for the 1st time in New Caledonia, and is taking a step that is still unwelcome for the FLNKS, given the decolonization process the country has been engaged in for nearly 30 years. France is using this operation and our country as an "aircraft carrier" to promote its Indo-Pacific strategy in the region by remilitarizing New Caledonia, a military demonstration that is contrary to UN principles for a territory on the list of countries to be decolonized. The Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, is putting the country at risk of taking a partisan geostrategic stance with which the FLNKS cannot associate, and which could put our country in a situation of insecurity," writes the FLNKS in a press release.
