The field of the stars or the stirred earth - Part. 2
France. 2021-2022. Work supported by the BNF and the Ministry of Culture within the framework of the great state photographic commission. Since 2020, at the end of the first confinement, I have initiated a photographic reflection on the Way of Compostela. A first axis of work was to question myself on the modernity of this pilgrimage, its current significance and the possible echo with the ghosts of the past and my own sensitivity.
In parallel, I developed a second axis of work (which I present here) concerning the pilgrims and the sedentary people living and working along the way. It was a question of going to meet them and questioning them about their situation, their relationship with the world and the territory. I met several trades, a plurality of profiles along my itinerary. Interviewing the sedentary people was a way to draw a portrait of the territory and to photographically question its current state (rural spaces, habitat...)
This project as a whole draws a portrait of our country, reveals the ramifications of its rich history up to the present day, and establishes links with current preoccupations about space, the relationship to the land, and the place of beliefs in the modern era.
This is what this traveling work proposes: a photographic investigation of our human condition and a temporal journey through our shared history.
The principle of walking is not insignificant. It implies the very idea of proximity, of intimacy. To go towards the other, as close as possible, in contact, in the effort, to put oneself at the same level as the interlocutor. To walk on this territory, to take the time to cross these roads, these fields, these villages, these isolated establishments testifies to a presupposed implication. This position as a walker allowed me to really unravel relationships and facilitated the construction of human links and the collection of words and testimonies.
This photographic project has taken up the same working process that characterizes me: the collection of photographic materials where portraits, landscapes and details will correspond and feed each other, creating an immersive narrative. The idea is to compose a corpus of amalgamated images, constituting a visual mosaic where all the photographic materials respond to each other by scattered touches.
