Burmese Resistance in Exile
On February 1, 2021 in Myanmar, the civilian government of the National League for Democracy (NLD), which had won the November 2020 parliamentary elections, was overthrown by the military junta. Arrested at the time of the coup, which ended a decade of democratic transition, Aung San Suu Kyi herself was placed in solitary confinement in a prison in Naypyidaw in late June 2021. She is still there today, sentenced by a military court in December 2022 to a total of 33 years in prison on a variety of charges, including illegally importing walkie-talkies, violating anti-Covid restrictions, provoking the military, violating state secrets, election fraud and finally corruption.
Surprised at first by the peaceful demonstrations, strikes and civil disobedience of the Burmese population, the army ended up imposing terror on the population.
The military eventually used terror to crush the pro-democracy movement, known as the Spring Revolution.
Today (February 2023), the situation in Myanmar is slipping further and further into full-blown civil war: since February 2021, more than 2,900 civilians, including 244 children, have been killed by the security forces and the military, at least 17,572 people have been arrested, and 13,763 remain in detention.
According to a local NGO's count, hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes and are therefore internally displaced or exiled in other countries. Finally, the death penalty was applied for the first time since 1988, with the hanging of four opponents of the junta in late July 2022.
The vast majority of activists are wanted by the military and have had to flee Burma. They went underground and joined the resistance, either in the Burmese jungle with the PDF (People's Defence Force, the armed wing of the National Unity Government (NUG), formed in May 2021 in response to the coup d'état), or in the neighboring countries, mainly in Thailand.
This reportage follows these Burmese in exile in Thailand and in France, with diverse profiles but who all have in common to refuse the military takeover of their country, and to support in one way or another the Burmese resistance.
RQ:
Because of the risks that this could entail for them or their families, some people did not want to reveal their identity and are therefore testifying with their faces hidden. In the same way, I cannot reveal all the information concerning them, and thus did not transcribe the integrality of their words in the legends.
