Artistic and peaceful occupation of the Centre des Arts et de la Culture (CAC) in Pointe à Pitre
The Centre des Arts et de la Culture (CAC) in Pointe à Pitre has been taken over by the
Kolektif Awtis Rezistans since 5 July 2021. Since then, many artists have expressed themselves on the walls of this disused building.
Culture and Resistance as a common thread to signify the vital need to reflect on a real cultural policy.
The CAC brings together artists who are committed and organised to demand and fight for their rights, to be listened to and to take their full place in society.
The CAC is a public building, once the cultural centre par excellence in Guadeloupe. Miles Davis, Patrick St Eloi, Laurent Voulzy.... have marked the stage of this emblematic place.
But since 2009, a construction site has been standing in the heart of the city. For 12 years it has been a symbol of disaffection, of a lack of cultural policy, of a blatant artistic impoverishment. The renovation of the building might not be resumed, which could be interpreted as a lack of interest in creation, the absence of cultural ambition on an island where talent springs from everywhere.
A society that does not take culture into account is a society that no longer transmits, that becomes dull, the situation is critical.
The collective wishes to make its voice heard, to be heard so that a change can take place.
Today, the artists occupy the site, live there, eat there and sleep there for some. The recovery of materials from the site has become the raw material for many works, which are in dialogue with each other and are the current witness of this commitment. All forms of art find their place there, the CAC has become a formidable place of sharing and exchange.
The collective hopes to eventually create an artistic third place open to all people along three lines: creation and artistic transmission, cultural mediation and artistic dissemination.
